I spent years assuming my family was German, our surname is literally a German word. It wasn’t until I started building a family tree that I found a birth record registered in Luxembourg, not Germany. That one record changed everything: within a year, three generations of my family had Luxembourg passports.
Then I found out my grandmother was born in Canada. Another citizenship. Another process I had to figure out from scratch.
